The Siemens Elmiskop IA was introduced in 1964 to replace the aging Model I electron microscope, which had been the workhorse of the company for 10 years.

This microscope addressed the demand for a high resolution instrument that had good flexibility in operation, yet produced images through a complete range of magnification. Other manufacturers of the period were also attempting to produce what then termed the Universal electron microscope. Features include switched magnifications, a high-quality simplified vacuum pump (that replaced the cumbersome water-cooled diffusion pump), and excellent image quality at the high resolution.
