The ancient Greek and Roman civilizations used wine as an offering to their gods. Perhaps the most infamous of these is the Greek god Dionysus. Cults devoted to this god of revelry celebrated him by imbibing a great deal of his favorite libation. Wine was also poured in devotion to Roman domestic deities, such as the Penates, gods of the food cupboard.
